HALF DAY
IZMIR TOUR
16.00-
20.00
Duration:
4 Hours
Fare: 10
€
Price includes
transportation and guidance. Entrance fees and
meals are not included.
PROGRAM
Start
with a drive to the top of
Mount Pagus which
rises above the city center. Enjoy the
panoramic views of the city and Bay of Izmir from the
walls of Kadifekale,
an ancient fortress built by Alexander the Great. Visit the city's
symbol, its Ottoman
Clock Tower. Finally, penetrate its elaborate
bazaar
(one of my favorites in all of Turkey) which stretches for blocks.
You can see the best of Izmir in only 3 hours!
Kadifekale (on Mt. Pagos)
Kadifekale (or ‘Velvet Castle’) was supposedly built after Alexander
the Great received a vision in the 4th century BC. Many antiquities
belonging to the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman times
found here can be seen in the İzmir Archeology Museum.
Kemeraltı,
İzmir’s Old Bazaar
Kemeraltı is the crowded trade area where Ottoman-style buildings
abound. This area has a rich cultural heritage thanks to its old
streets, squares, historical and religious buildings. Spice, candy,
and textile shops which have been passed from generation to
generation are still satisfying customers from all over the world.
Hisar Mosque
(1592), Kestane Bazaar Mosque (1663), Kemeraltı Mosque (1671),
Kızlarağası Inn (1741), Konak Yalı Mosque (1754), Ethnography Museum
(1831), The Clock Tower (the symbol of the city for over one hundred
years) are among the multicultural elements that have decorated the
city for hundreds of years.

Fare: 20
€
Price includes
transportation and guidance. Entrance fees and lunch are not included.
PROGRAM
Ephesus,
is one of the most famous cities in antiquity. Programs start in
Ephesus , the veritable cradle of early
Christianity.
Visit the
Shrine Of The
Virgin Mary
, where she supposedly spent her later days. Proceed
to Ephesus and see spectacular ruins from the period of St. Paul ,
some of which have only recently been excavated. See the Odeon , the
Bouleterion, Fountains, the Temples , the Brothel, the Library, the
Agoras, the Great Theatre, the Roman Baths, the Gymnasiums. Visit
the Archaelogical Museum , St. John's Basalica and his tomb, and
Temple Of Artemis (one of seven wonders of the
ancient world).
About Ephesus
The ancient city
of
Ephesus, located near the Aegean Sea in modern day
Turkey, was one of the great cities of the Greeks in Asia Minor.
In ancient times Ephesus was the home of the
Temple of
Artemis, one of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Today, the ruins of Ephesus are a major
tourist attraction, especially for travelers on Mediterranean
cruises. Ephesus remains a sacred site for Christians due to its
association with several biblical figures, including St. Paul, St.
John the Evangelist and the Virgin Mary.
About
House of the Virgin Mary
The
House of the
Virgin Mary, located in a nature park between
Ephesus
and Seljuk, is believed to be the last residence of the Virgin Mary,
mother of Jesus. The peaceful site is sacred to both Christians and
Muslims, and is visited by many tourists and pilgrims.
According to
predominant Christian tradition, Mary was brought to Ephesus by the
Apostle John after the Resurrection of Christ and lived out her days
there. This is based mainly on the traditional belief that John came
to Ephesus combined with the biblical statement that Jesus consigned
her to John's care (John 19:26-27).
About Sirince
Sirince is a
wonderful little Aegean village of 600 inhabitants.
Most of the houses in the village date from the 19th century or
earlier. They were built at a time when Sirince was predominantly a
Greek village. The village lies in a lovely bowl of hills surrounded
by peach orchards, vineyards and olive groves. The higher hills are
covered with pine forest. Nearly all houses command a pastoral
panorama extending over many miles, undisturbed by any modern
development. The surroundings are full of
idyllic
country walks.

Asclepion
(medical center of the ancient world)
Pergamon was a
small settlement during the Archaic Period.
Lysimachos,
one of the generals of Alexander the Great and who had become the
sovereign of Anatolia after 301 B.C., delivered the war
expenditures, at the amount of 9000 talents (1 talent is believed to
be US$ 7,500 approx.), to Philetarios who was the commander of
Pergamon, and the kingdom founded by Philetarios by using this sum
of money following Lysimachos's death, flourished and became the
most eminent center of culture of the Hellenistic period for 150
years. Eumenes I, Attalos I and Eumenes II were enthroned
successively after Philetarios. Eumenes II took acropolis of Athens
as an example and had the acropolis of Pergamon adorned with works
of art which reflected fine taste, and Pergamon became one of the
most graceful cities of the world. Attalos III who succeeded Attalos
II, handed over his land to the Romans when he died in 133 B.C.
